How to Track Expenses as Gen Z: No Spreadsheets Required

The honest truth about expense tracking

Most personal finance advice on the internet is written by people who enjoy making spreadsheets. That's not most of us.

Gen Z doesn't need a lecture about compound interest. We need a way to understand our money that fits into how we actually live — quickly, on our phones, without a 30-step setup process.

Here's the Gen Z approach to expense tracking.

Step 1: Stop trying to be perfect

The biggest reason people give up on expense tracking is perfectionism. They miss one day, feel like they've ruined the system, and quit entirely.

Don't track every transaction. Track most of them. An 80% accurate picture of your spending is infinitely more useful than a 0% accurate one.

Step 2: Use AI to do the boring parts

The most annoying part of expense tracking is typing in transactions. Your bank charged you ₹249 for Spotify. You know that. But you still have to open an app, tap "new transaction", enter the amount, select a category, save.

Wallezy's AI SMS Parser fixes this. When your bank sends you an SMS alert (HDFC, SBI, ICICI, Axis — it handles them all), you paste it into Wallezy and AI fills in the expense automatically. Amount, merchant, category — done.

For physical purchases, the Receipt Scanner does the same thing from a photo.

Step 3: Review weekly, not daily

Daily review of every transaction is exhausting and unnecessary. Instead:

  • Log expenses throughout the week (takes 15 seconds per transaction)
  • On Sunday, spend 5 minutes looking at the weekly summary
  • Note one thing that surprised you and one thing you'll change

That's it. That's the whole system.

Step 4: Let the roast motivate you

Wallezy's Spending Roast feature is genuinely useful for behavior change. Once a month (or whenever you want), AI gives you a funny but accurate breakdown of your spending habits.

"You spent ₹3,800 on food delivery this month. That's 12 days of groceries. Your future self is begging you to meal prep just once."

It's savage. It's also effective in a way that dry pie charts aren't.

The Gen Z expense tracking setup

  1. 1.Download Wallezy (it's a PWA — just open it in Chrome and add to home screen)
  2. 2.Set up your categories (use the Gen Z preset: Food Delivery, Streaming, Gaming, etc.)
  3. 3.Set a monthly budget per category
  4. 4.Enable SMS paste or bank SMS alerts
  5. 5.Log as you go, review on Sundays
  6. 6.Get roasted monthly

Zero spreadsheets. Takes 10 minutes to set up. Actually works.
